Green River Canoe Trip, 2023

Apr-May 2023:
The Green River is a major tributary of the Colorado River, originating in Wyoming and flowing 730 miles to its terminus at its confluence with the Colorado River in southern Utah. The canyons carved by the river are some of the most dramatic and scenic in the United States.

Brother-in-law Rich and I chose to paddle the lower portion of the river, putting in at Ruby Ranch and following its course for 97 miles to the confluence with the Colorado, and then 3 miles down the Colorado to our take out spot near Spanish Bottom, which is just above the intimidating rapids of Cataract Canyon. Our entire journey down the Green was on Class 1 flatwater, which was perfect for novices like us. The final 3 miles on the Colorado contained some minor riffles that required a little more caution, but were still mild.

The entire 100 mile trip lasted 8 days and 8 nights. On the ninth day, we and our canoe were picked up by jetboat and hauled 49 miles back up the Colorado to the town of Moab. Canoe rental, shuttle to our starting point at Ruby Ranch, and jetboat pickup were all provided by Tex's Riverways in Moab.
